Glossary of Hypnotic Terms

 
 

A brief glossary of Stage Hypnosis and Therapeutic Terms

These terms are by no means the complete set of terms but rather a collection of most commonly heard terms when discussing stage hypnosis entertainment or even therapeutic hypnosis.

 

Age-Regression

The subject is able to recall & relive events of the past with the same feeling and emotion.

Amnesia

The inability to recall events of the trance. Usually indicates a somnambulist (see below).

Anesthesia

The insensibility to pain, used quite often in hypnotherapy after cause of discomfort is determined.

Catelepsy

Simple muscular control. Demonstations include from simple eye locking to full body stiffness between two chairs

Hypnosis

A state of mind usually induced by another in which the subject is in a heightened state of suggestibility.

Self-Hypnosis

Or Auto-Hypnosis where the subject has achieved the ability to induce the hypnotic state by themselves.

Hypnotist

One who iduces the hypnotic state.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is used for therapeutic benefit.
